Trapiche Medalla Malbec, 2015.
Lauren says, “We are tasting this sort of blind (out of 3 options.) Very deep purple-red, almost black. Strong aroma. First burning ethanol in my nose, then cassis, black berry, tea leaves, and tobacco. Flavor of licorice and vanilla. Extreme tannins. Medium bodied. A powerful wine. Needs aeration for sure. But I feel like it will be good and I will like it. 7/10 at the moment. We will see how it progresses. I think this is the Italian or the merlot. Not the rioja. Dang, those tannins..”
Zach says, “Opened this bottle blind — I poured the bottle into a decanter with a blindfold on. It was not easy to do. Its potent aroma rushes from the bottle as soon as it was uncorked. The wine is very thick in the glass. Color is dark, black cherry red. The nose is rich and heavy. Notes of candied cherries, wet earth/moss, shoe polish, and ash/smoke. Heavy mouthfeel. Extremely tannic and grippy, but unmistakably smooth. Finish is dry, but tart and acidic enough to keep you enticed. I have missed red. 8/10”
